How to use AI to study: college, exams and languages

Used the right way, AI works like a private tutor available at any hour: it explains things differently when you don’t understand, creates exercises and grades your answers. Used the wrong way — just to get ready-made answers — it gets in the way of learning.

1. Ask for tailored explanations

Explain [topic] as if I were starting from scratch.
Use an everyday analogy, then a worked example step by step.
At the end, ask me 3 questions for me to answer and you to grade.

Still don’t get it? Keep the conversation going: “explain it another way”, “give me a simpler example”, “where did my reasoning go wrong?”.

2. Study with your own material (NotebookLM)

Google’s NotebookLM is free and answers only based on the files you upload (course packets, PDFs, slides, notes), showing where each answer came from. That greatly reduces the risk of the AI making up content.

1. Go to notebooklm.google.com with your Google account.
2. Create a notebook and add the material for the course or the official exam outline.
3. Ask for summaries, study guides, questions and explanations of the hard parts.

3. Flashcards and review

Using the attached material, create 20 flashcards in the format question | short answer,
focusing on the concepts that come up most on tests. Then quiz me one at a time and only show the answer after I try.

4. Practice tests for certification, SAT/ACT and bar or licensing exams

Act as an examiner for [exam name], following the style of the exam board.
Create 10 multiple-choice questions on [topic from the exam outline], in the board's style, with 5 answer choices.
Don't show the answer key yet. When I answer, grade them and explain why each wrong choice is wrong.

5. Languages

• Voice conversation: the ChatGPT and Gemini apps let you practice speaking out loud.
• Essay correction:

Correct the Spanish text below. Show the corrected version and explain each mistake simply, in English.
Then give me 3 sentences to practice the same structure.

How NOT to use it

• Copying finished assignments: besides not learning anything, many schools consider it plagiarism and use detectors.
• Accepting without checking: ask for sources and check them.
• Studying only by reading summaries: what makes content stick is practice — answering questions, explaining in your own words, solving exercises.
